20.01.2005 IED TORINO TO UNVEIL THE FIAT 'X 1/99' CONCEPT AT THE 75TH GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTORSHOW

'X 1/99' was realised by Fabio Bisson, Christian Cudly, Tony Gatta, Luis Huertas, Christian Nishimura , Michele Salvatore and Josè Hernandez Wong. Tutors of the project were Josè Maria Alonso Garcia, Andrea Loi and Carl Palazzani.

"This is a project which marks an important moment for the IED," says Cesar Mendoza, Director of IED Torino, "We have been provided with a simulated project that is in essence realistic, followed by a committed company that has followed every step of the development. I regard this as a concrete sign of great evolution in our relationship and collaboration between large companies, who are becoming increasingly interested in the creativity, freshness and professionalism of our students. Moreover it provides us with an important field of activites.

"Furthermore, it has emerged that the secondary and component-making sector has come considerably closer to our activity. It is also important to highlight how the working methodology adopted in the Master’s sums up the concept of Work Experience, a fundamental aim in the educational process of the Master’s: the class dealt with a real project, developed skills in teamwork, with everything involved, and the constant contending with the commission who evaluated and judged the various suggestions until the final choice was made. This is exactly what happens in a real professional context, when one leaves school and starts working in a design centre.”

Additional Jaguar design project to be dislpayed

Beside the 'X 1/99' prototype in Geneva, five scale models will be presented from the thesis 'The missing Jag - la Jaguar che non c' era'. This project was realized in collaboration with Jaguar Cars during the final year of the three-year Transportation Design course in the 2003-2004 academic year.

The students were led by Fulvio Fantolino, Coordinator of the IED Transportation Design course, and, as representatives of the commission, Julian Thomson, Chief Designer Advanced Design Study of Jaguar and Hugo Nightingale, Senior Designer at Jaguar.

Owing to a lack of space at the stand there will be a resumé of the project, which involved 30 students, represented by five models: 'No Type', by Yuji Murakami and Carlo Palazzani; 'Elegantrasgression', by Ermanno Armando and Marco Di Gregorio; 'My Type', by Jakob Annermal and Yuri Sofyan Marvel; 'J-V12', by Alessandro Malaspina and Nunzio Marrocco; 'Piccola Jaguar', by Andrea Loi and Hubert Tassin. These models were created in cooperation with Cecomp.

The 'X 1/99' 1:1 model for the Geneva International Motor Show is being realised by Cecomp.

Alongside the 'X 1/99', IED will present a number of projects along the theme of 'The missing Jag - la Jaguar che non c' era'. Above: a project by Hubert Tassin and Andrea Loi.

It was a wonderful experience and an honour for the students to work with a company like Jaguar Cars, which has such a  strong tradition behind it. The process through which the project went through (giving much importance and devoting much time to the modelling of the designs) allowed the IED students to examine the formal languages closely, identifying shapes and designs like those of Jaguar. The collection of works to be presented in Geneva indicates several possibilities: futuristic developments, like in Murakami and Palazzani’s vision; or modernisation of the romantic character which is typical of the company, like in Loi and Tassin’s design. All these elements give a taste of how these future professionals see the evolution of the company.
