Automobili Lamborghini continues to expand its presence in Australia, with the launch of the new Gallardo Spyder in Sydney last Thursday coming only weeks after its Frankfurt Motor Show world premiere. With the Spyder displayed alongside two other models, together representing three-quarters of Lamborghini’s model lineup in Australia – the Murcielago Roadster and Gallardo coupe – the stand emphasises the growing impact of Lamborghini in the rarefied air of the supercar market.

Just prior to the launch, the Managing Director of Lamborghini Australia, Andrew Smith, gave a short press conference which helped to highlight the ways in which Lamborghini have applied cutting-edge convertible technology to the new model. The Gallardo Spyder features strengthened sills, while the A-pillars have been strengthened with the adoption of an automatic Roll-Over protection system, whilst the roof itself is naturally fully electric and takes only just over 20 seconds to raise or lower.

This last feature was highlighted following the unveiling of the car, when the V10 engine was started up, and the roof raised and lowered. Even ticking over, the engine displays that characteristic supercar note; with revisions bringing its total power output to 520bhp at 8,000rpm, it also has the bark to match its bite.

The main feature of this car, though, is its roof – and to that end, observers have highlighted the remarkably clean nature of the conversion’s integration.

Indeed, the Gallardo Spyder’s immensely rigid spaceframe chassis features a comprehensively redesigned ‘top half’ compared with its Coupé sister, the better to accommodate the particular demands of retaining a stunning look whether the roof is up or down.
