01.03.2006 "The whole world recognised the immense success of the Torino Olympics, a success obtained thanks to the inhabitants of this extraordinary territory," IOC President Jacques Rogge praised Turin

After two weeks spent in the world's spotlight, the XX Winter Olympics in Turin, drew to a close on Sunday. There was an exchange of gifts on Monday morning between Torino's Mayor, Sergio Chiamparino, and the International Olympic Committee President, Jacques Rogge.

In sign of hospitality he gave the city gold medal to Rogge, who responded with the Olympic gold cup for the excellent organization. An important recognition, the latter, was instituted by the inventor of the Olympics Pierre De Coubertin in 1906. Together with Rogge on Monday there was the supervisor of the Games, Mario Pescante, and the TOROC President, Valentino Castellani, who presented the mayor the torch.        
 
The IOC President, Jacques Rogge was received in Palazzo Cisterna by the President of the Provincia di Torino Antonio Saitta for the closing goodbyes of the XX Olympic Winter Games. Rogge atteneded with the Sport Under-Secretary Mario Pescante, the IOC Executive Director Gilbert Felly, and the TOROC President Valentino Castellani. There was also a large delegation of the Provincial Council present, led by President Sergio Vallero.

The President of the Provincia Antonio Saitta  donated to Jacques Rogge a sculpture by the artist Silvio Vigliaturo called "Signs of Light ", already delivered during the last few days to the Italian athletes who won medals. "I would like to remember, a few hours from the Closing Ceremony," commented the IOC President "people’s warmth and enthusiasm. This morning I personally consulted the most important press agencies and international papers: the whole world recognized the immense success of the Torino Olympics. A success obtained thanks to the inhabitants of this extraordinary territory. In two weeks," concluded Rogge, "the Paralympics Winter Games will begin, I am convinced that they will bring strong emotions among spectators".
 
The Olympic flame was placed on Monday morning in the council room of Palazzo Cisterna. It is a beautiful gift by the TOROC President Valentino Castellani's to the Italian province.
