Fiat's new-generation of low-emission and highly-efficient petrol and diesel engine's will feature Delphi-supplied exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves which are today helping car manufacturer's reach stringent future global emission legislative requirements. Delphi is leveraging its experience as a world leader in gasoline exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves and as a diesel engine management systems supplier to develop a family of robust, cost-effective diesel EGR valves.

Fiat Auto has most recently incorporated EGR technology in its brand-new 95bhp 1.4-litre 16v 'Starjet' engine family, which is available from this month across the Fiat Grande Punto range.

EGR Valves

Electronic EGR valves recirculate metered amounts of exhaust gas into the engine’s intake system, helping limit the formation of NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions. The Delphi family of petrol and diesel EGR valves is based on an electronically actuated petrol and diesel exhaust gas recirculation valve. Delphi diesel EGR valves are available as both single poppet and dual poppet valves to meet all ranges of flow requirements for passenger vehicles, as well as many non-automotive applications. They are available with solenoid, torque motor, or direct current (DC) motor actuators to meet individual customer requirements for force, response, cost, and leak.

Performance Advantages

Delphi’s petrol and diesel EGR valves feature a robust design that inhibits carbon contamination (coking) that can adversely affect pintle operation. High opening and closing force also helps minimize the impact of carbon contamination. Fast open and close response time helps customers meet controllability requirements, while low internal and external leak performance helps minimize emissions and enables precise engine calibration, all in an efficient and cost-effective package.

Advanced Technology

Delphi can support a wide variety of automotive and non-automotive application requirements in Europe, Asia, and North America. Quality Delphi parts can be found on passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, agricultural vehicles, electrical generators, and more around the world. The most effective way to lower NOx output in an engine is to lower cylinder temperatures. This is accomplished best by limiting the amount of oxygen in the combustion chamber. Delphi’s EGR systems recirculate controlled amounts of effectively inert exhaust gases into the intake system where they mix with the incoming air. The effect can lower the combustion temperature below the threshold of 1370°C where NOx forms.
