16.03.2007 INTERVIEW WITH MASERATI CEO ROBERTO RONCHI

What made Maserati decide to renew its cooperation with Pininfarina?

Pininfarina and Maserati started to work together again in 2003, producing the Quattroporte. In view of its outstanding success, with 9000 vehicles sold in three years, and the excellent reception of the press which has assigned major international accolades, the company decided to continue along this road. Obviously, Maserati also wanted to explore other options, to give other designers a chance to present their proposals, but the possibility of continuing the work initiated in 2003 with Pininfarina was highly stimulating and the beautiful lines of the new coupé confirm that we made the right decision.

What are the particular aspects of this renewed cooperation?

First of all, it must be said that the new coupé uses the same platform as the Quattroporte. It is, therefore, of impressive size with lots of inside space, a sports car authorized to carry four persons, not a 2+2. While exploiting all available space in the best way possible, it was also necessary to create an elegant and at the same time very forceful look, able to emphasize the sporting DNA of the Tridente marque. A style that does not pass unnoticed, that creates a sensation and which remains - like that of the Quattroporte - in the history of the car.

"The design of the GranTurismo is characterised by large sections, especially as regards the front end and radiator grille, that recall the famous competition Maserati’s of the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies," says Roberto Ronchi (above, at the Geneva Motor Show last week with the new Maserati GranTurismo).

What sensations does the style of the new Maserati GranTurismo convey?

The design of the GranTurismo is characterised by large sections, especially as regards the front end and radiator grille, that recall the famous competition Maserati’s of the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies, while the rest of the design is avant-garde so as to exalt the technological “package” of the vehicle. Therefore, Pininfarina has once again succeeded in creating a design of rare beauty that is a successful amalgam of Maserati’s traditional values and futuristic lines that emphasize the high-tech contents of the new coupé.

What does the launch of this new GranTurismo mean for Maserati?

Together with the Quattroporte Automatic, the GranTurismo is intended to promote a major step forward in quality by Maserati, in terms of increased volumes and, consequently, as regards economic results. Maserati relies on these two models to become a well-consolidated, leading stakeholder in the market segments of luxury sports cars: models in a price range of between 80,000 and 130,000 euro, able to measure up to highly qualified, top-flight competitors.
