Luciano
Viaro and the
Automobilismo Storico's glorious Alfa Romeo 6C 1500
SS were in unstoppable form on the 1000 Millas Sport
where the duo teamed up once again, running in the
colours of the newly-formed Scuderia Storica
Alfa Romeo Argentina as they raced to overall
victory.
It was a highly impressive display by the Scuderia Storica Alfa Romeo Argentina
team with three of its cars finishing in the final top
six. Set up only this summer with the aim of
contributing to the development of the
Automobilismo Storico Alfa Romeo, Modena Alfa S.A, the
exclusive sales representative of Alfa Romeo in Argentina,
and Uruguay Modena Alfa S. A., formed in the Scuderia Storica Alfa Romeo Argentina.
After several successful outings the team would be
facing its biggest challenge yet on the 1000 Millas
Sport, and several cars and crews were flown over from
Italy especially for the event.
The 1000 Millas
Sport Argentina is the most important race within the
Argentine Sport Motor Vehicles Historic Regularity
Championship. This international event was created by the
Sport Automobiles Club of Argentina (CAS), and is now part
of the FIVA (International Federation of Ancient Motor
Vehicles) world calendar. Each year it gathers the lovers of
classic cars, featuring FIVA Sport vehicles manufactured
between 1920 and 1982, grouped as follows: Sport, Grand
Touring and Touring – approved by FIVA – which travel over
1000 km around the Patagonia lakes, valleys and mountains,
fighting for the first position in teams, divided into
competitions by brand, capacity, ladies, journalists,
personalities, newcomers, and habitués awards.
On this
occasion, as well as in the past years, the 1000 Millas took
place in Patagonia. The roadmap includes cities and towns
such as San Carlos de Bariloche, San Martín de los Andes,
Villa la Angostura, Junín de los Andes, Circuito Chico,
Villa Catedral, El Bolsón, and the Puyehue Hot Springs, in
Chile. The impressive Llao Llao –Hotel & Resort– was the
venue for the start and finish of each stage.
The event swung into motion on November 17th
with delivery of the competing cars for the trip to San
Carlos de Bariloche by truck. The teams arrived at San Carlos de Bariloche four
days later, and with a short trip to Llao Llao Hotel, before the checking of serial numbers, technical verification, and delivery of
documentation. Then it was onto the first stage of the event (22nd): Llao Llao, Bariloche, Villa
la Angostura, Paso Samore, Chile and the Hotel Termas de Puyehue (lunch) before returning to Llao Llao.
The second stage (23rd) saw the crews leave Llao Llao, heading towards Bariloche,
Confluencia, Alicura, Junín de los Andes and Collon Cura (lunch) before returning
once more to Llao
Llao. The third and final stage (24th) comprised a route of Llao Llao, Arelauquen, El
Bolsón, Lago Puelo and (lunch), then back to Llao Llao, with a meeting in the
hotel lobby and a Gala
Dinner with Awards Ceremony. November 25th saw the departure of teams and cars to Buenos
Aires.
The Italian
official museum's Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport (1928),
which won the 1928 "Mille Miglia" driven by Campari/Ramponi,
was flown over specially for the event and driven by this
year's Mille Miglia winner, Luciano Viaro, a victory gained
with the same car, and co-driven on this occasion by Juan C.
Sanchez Mariño; the pair raced to an impressive overall
victory ahead of Buga/Tina (Bentley).
Making it two of
the team's cars on the final podium in San Carlos de Bariloche
was the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport (1931) which Tazio Nuvolari
drove to victory in the
"Mille Miglia" in 1930 and 1931. It was driven in
Argentina last week by
Claudio Scalise, who is twice a previous winner of the “1000 Millas Argentinas”
(2004 and 2005) and for four consecutive years the Argentinean championship
of “Sport Histórico” (2002 to 2005). He was paired
together on the 1000 Millas Sport with the experienced Argentinean pilot Gustavo Pecoroff,
and they almost made it a 1-2 vfinish for the Scuderia Storica
Alfa Romeo Argentina.
There was even
more joy as the Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Le Mans (1931) driven
by Daniel Claramunt, Sporting Director of Scuderia Storica Alfa
Romeo Argentina, and
Maurizio Colpani, finished in an impressive sixth place. The
team's fourth and final car, an Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider Veloce 1750
(1969), was driven by
Jorge Rendo and his son to a solid 69th place.
