YAMAHA ABARTH FZ1 ASSETTO CORSE

This will be Abarth's second project in a year carried out in conjunction with bike maker Yamaha as last year the Turin-based company developed the Yamaha FZ1 Abarth Asetto Corse bike which celebrated Karl Abarth's 100th birthday.

SACS MARINE STRIDER 12S

Dubbed the Powershore Abarth SP (Sport Prototipo) this boat will, just like the Lancia di Lancia project, be based around Sacs Marine's popular and competition-inspired "maxi" RIB, the Strider 12S (above).

Hot on the heels of the outlining of the forthcoming "Lancia di Lancia" powerboat comes news that Abarth is also teaming up with SACS Marine and designer Christian Grande, this time to create a unique Scorpion craft that will instead use Yamaha engines. Dubbed the Powershore Abarth SP (Sport Prototipo) this boat will, just like the Lancia di Lancia project, be based on Sacs Marine's popular and versatile competition-inspired "maxi" RIB [Rubbed Inflatable Boat], the Strider 12S.

Abarth's project though will see San Giacomo-based Sacs Marine, a firm that was founded in 1990 and which builds a wide array of powerful craft, fitting the Powershore Abarth SP with a trio of 350 bhp Yamaha V8 outboard motors. This will be Abarth's second project in a year carried out in conjunction with Yamaha as last year the Turin-based company developed the Yamaha FZ1 Abarth Asetto Corse bike which celebrated Karl Abarth's 100th birthday. The FZ1 featured a 998cc 150 bhp (106 Nm) version of the Japanese bike maker's four-stroke DOHC engine with further upgrades being made to the suspension (by Ohlins) and the brakes as well as a striking new paint scheme. Fiat is also the main sponsor of the Yamaha MotoGP team and the bikes, ridden by Valentino Rosso and Jorge Lorenzo, appeared in the red-and-white Scorpion colours at last year's Australian Grand Prix.

Into the Powershore Abarth SP will go a trio of the Yamaha Marine Group's ground-breaking F350 outboard motor. Introduced two years ago this was the boating industry’s first V8 5.3-litre, four-stroke outboard motor. Producing 350 prop-shaft rated horsepower, it is designed to provide massive thrust for the heaviest off-shore outboard-powered boats. The Yamaha F350 in fact provides up to 45 percent more thrust than 250 hp class outboards. The company’s first V8 outboard powerhead was designed specifically for the marine market and features more than 600 new parts. The design is a 60-degree V8 with 32 valves (four valves per cylinder) and double overhead cams. the 365 kg unit (including transmission) uses variable camshaft timing to optimise the engine’s torque at low and mid-range rpm. With sequential, multi-point fuel injection, it has eight long intake tracks in the induction system to optimize power. In addition, it features In-Bank Exhaust with Dual Power Surge Chambers, a system that relieves pressure in the exhaust ports. The transmission will be supplied by Jolly Drive.

Designer Christian Grande, who penned the original Strider 12S and also developed the Lancia di Lancia powerboat which is set to be unveiled on the Venice Lido on September 4 during the 66th Venice International Film Festival, has tweaked the Sacs Strider 12S for Abarth. The young designer has worked in conjunction with Centro Stile Fiat Group Automobiles in realising this project. Like the innovation that features on the Lancia di Lancia derivative, the Powershore Abarth SP is set to combine luxury with raw power and performance and contain innovative details that will be both ground-breaking and also mould it in the historic traditions of the Abarth brand. Using the same Strider 12S basis as the Lancia di Lancia, the Powershore Abarth SP will be 12.30 metres long, 3.64 metres wide and with a draft of 0.7 metres at the propellors. It will have a 960 litre fuel tank and a 120 litre water tank and weight in at around 5.7 tons, slightly lighter than the production Sacs Strider 12S.

Some of the features of the Sacs Strider 12S that will be carried into the Powershore Abarth SP will include a 10 kg steel anchor and chain; engine room hydraulic actuators; surge tank; cleats; master cabin with double size bed (sleeping accommodation for 2 persons); rechargers with external plug and cable; external cushion stuffed with external plug and cable; full linen equipment; external shower; Fridge (65 litres); electric air compressor; sink; navigation lights; side porthole; windscreen; general swicthboard; ladder; water tank capacity 120 litres; black water tank; fuel tank capacity 960 litres; cutting board; external table; bathroom internal with electric WC, lavabo and shower; embedded horn; winch and Zulag Isotta steering wheel. The Powershore Abarth 12S is set to make its world debut at the 49th Salone Nautico Internazionale di Genova 2009 which will take place from October 3-11.
