10.08.2010 MODEL YEAR TWEAKS FOR THE FIAT IDEA ON THE ITALIAN MARKET

FIAT IDEA MODEL YEAR 2011

The Fiat Idea minivan has received a Model Year upgrade for Italy, the only key market in which it maintains a respectable level of demand, although the changes are mostly in terms of repositioning the range; the small MPV however does get the Bosch-sourced Start&Stop system and Euro 5 compliant engines.

The Idea, which is based on the underpinnings of Progetto 188 (Punto Classic), has today become almost a forgotten model in the Fiat Automobiles model lineup. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and introduced in 2003, the B-segment minivan, which was noted for incorporating a well-thought-out and versatile interior, found very little favour with consumers in markets outside Italy and only really sells now on its domestic market in small numbers; its more refined sister, the Lancia Musa, is comfortably the best-seller in the class in Italy.

Last month the Idea, which is built at the Mirafiori factory in Turin, shifted 489 units in Italy, compared to 781 during the same month a year ago. For the year-to-date, the mini-MPV has 3,450 sales in Italy, compared to 5,417 units for the corresponding period last year. The Musa by comparison has outsold it at a rate of 5-to-1 in Italy this year. The Musa benefits from a wider and more comprehensive range, comparable prices when compared across higher trim levels, and better quality materials in the cabin. The Lancia version has also benefited from a significant mid-life facelift, which amongst other improvements, increased the luggage compartment volume by 70 litres.

The Idea has now been launched into the Italian showrooms in Model Year specification. Visually and cosmetically the car, which hasn't been updated in any significant way since its launch, remains unaltered. Under the skin, though, there are some changes, including Euro 5 engines and Start&Stop technology. The three-level range (Active, Dynamic and Emotion) range kicks off with the 1.2 16v Active version at 14,901, with trim levels rising in increments of 1,500 euros. The range now includes the Dynamic 1.6 Multijet 120 CV, Emotion 1.4 95 CV and Emotion 1.3 Multijet 95 CV, all benefiting from the fuel-saving Start&Stop system.

As standard equipment, the entry-level Idea Active MY version includes ABS, dual front airbags, trip computer, ‘Dualdrive’ power steering, and 15-inch wheels. Optional ‘packs’ can enrich the model’s equipment levels, with the ‘Active Pack’ including radio with CD player, sliding seats and Isofix attachments, while ‘Active Plus’ adds a radio with CD/MP3 player and steering wheel controls. The middle version, Dynamic, has all the features of the Active plus electrically-adjustable door mirrors, front fog lamps, side curtain airbags, colour-coded body mouldings and door handles, while radio with CD/MP3 and steering wheel controls, sliding seats and Isofix fittings also come as standard. The top-level Emotion version gets the addition of a front centre armrest and lumbar adjustment for both front seats, electrically-operated rear windows, parking sensors, tinted glass, ceiling-mounted storage compartment, dual-zone climate control and leather steering wheel.
