09.09.2012 FIAT FOLLOWS THE ITALIAN MARKET'S DOWNWARD AUGUST TREND

The Fiat Panda continued its run as Italy's best seller in August, it added 4,996 units which was almost double that of its larger sister, the Fiat Punto (above), which sold 2,637 units.

Fiat Group mirrored the Italian market's downward trend during the quiet sales month of August, both fell by a fifth with the Italy's domestic carmaker selling 16,699 cars to take a market share for the month of 29.58 percent.

That represented a year-on-year fall of just under four and a half thousand units for the Fiat Group. In total 56,447 new cars were sold in Italy last month according to data released by UNRAE.

The Fiat however brand beat the market to fall 17.54 percent to 12,165 units and raise its market share for the month just gone to 21.55 percent. Alfa Romeo matched the market after selling 1,618 cars, it was down 20.49 percent to take a 2.87 percent share. Lancia's 2,613 units was down 31.69 percent while Jeep's 293 units was a fall of 24.48 percent. There was little joy for the Fiat Group's two luxury/performance brands, Ferrari lost 62.50 percent to sell only 6 cars while Maserati shed 71.43 percent to drop to sales of 4 units.

For the year to the end of August 981,030 new cars have been sold in Italy, down 19.86 percent year-on-year. Fiat Group has 290,840 sales, down more than seventy thousand units and 20.20 percent on the same period last year (364,444 Jan-Aug 2011). Its year-to-date market share remains flat on 29.65 percent (29.77 percent for the same period last year).

The Fiat brand has 204,381 sales for the year-to-date and when compared to 255,150 during the same period last year that's a fall of 19.90 percent. Alfa Romeo is on 30,422 units and is down fourteen thousand units and 30.93 percent, Lancia has 51,137 sales and drops nine thousand units and 13.99 percent. The niche brands have seen no joy either, Jeep is on 4,614 units and off just over 300 units and 7.42 percent, Ferrari is on 205 units, down 57.91 percent, while Maserati suffers the worst, the Trident drops 75.23 percent after declining from 327 units during the January to August period last year to 81 units for the same eight months in 2012.

The Fiat 500 (1,694) was fifth, the Lancia Ypsilon (1,570) was next up and Alfa Romeo's Giulietta (1,093) made it five Fiat Group Automobiles (FGA) models in the top ten.

For the year-to-date the Panda has increased its leadership of the Italian market, it is on 79,324 units, with the Punto (57,740), Ypsilon (32,559) and 500 (30,745) making it a top four lock out for FGA. The Giulietta (21,338) was the final FGA representative in the top ten.

In A-segment the Panda and 500 topped the lists. The former was up just over five hundred units on the same month last year while the 500 was flat. Thanks to the new model the Panda is up almost two thousand units for the year-to-date compared to the same month period last year while the 500 has shed fourteen thousand sales. The 500C accounted for just 75 sales in August and has 2,674 sales for the year-to-date.

In B-segment the Punto was top for the month and also for the year-to-date, but it has dropped thirty thousand units so far this year despite its spring 'emergency' model year refresh. Alfa Romeo's fading Mito added 471 sales last month and for the year-to-date its on 8,139 units, down more than six thousand units.

The Giulietta posted a respectable August; it dropped just over one hundred units although it was well adrift of the VW Golf. For the year-to-date it has 21,344 sales, down four and a half thousand units. In D-segment the Fiat Freemont added 308 units to take it to 3,133 since launch.

In the class for small SUVs Lancia's Musa was the clear winner on 608 units, more than double its sales compared to August 2011 as well as being comfortably ahead of the second best seller last month, Opel's Meriva, which added 372 units. Also in its final days, is its sister, the Fiat Idea, which added 209 units in August. For the year-to-date the Musa is the small MPV leader on 9,587 units with the Idea sixth on 2,730 units.

Amongst large MPVs the Lancia Voyager was third in class and added 66 units. It has now tipped through the four figure bracket for the year-to-date, resting on 1,024 units since launch.

Fiat's Qubo and Doblò continued to lead out 'Multispace', although they lost ground on last year, shifting 528 and 170 units respectively. For the year-to-date the Qubo is on 7,912 units while the Doblò is on 2,598 units.

Elsewhere, Lamborghini sold 2 cars in Italy in August, that was in fact flat on the same month last year and it now has 48 sales for the year-to-date, down 14.29 percent. Finally, DR Motor, which sells cars from China's Chery Automobile which it assembles in Italy from CKD kits, fell 81.38 percent to 27 units in August. That puts it on 532 units for the year-to-date, down 77.36 on the same period last year.
