Fiat Group suffered another month of steeply falling sales in Italy in September; the carmaker lost a quarter of all its sales as all brands made double digit declines, which mirrored the overall market as Fiat Group contracted to 33,055 units.

In total 109,178 new cars were sold in Italy last month, down 25.74 percent year-on-year, according to automotive trade body UNRAE. Fiat Group dropped ten and a half thousand units and 24.26 percent. The carmaker however fractionally outperformed the overall market and its September share of all Italian sales edged from 29.69 percent last year to 30.28 percent in 2012.

Splitting the Fiat Group Automobiles (FGA) brands up, Fiat lost more than seven thousand sales and 22.92 percent to 23,993 units in September, but as the softest faller from FGA, its market share edged up to 21.98 percent. Lancia sold 5,449 cars to match the market, dropping 25.61 percent year-on-year and keeping its share relatively unchanged on 4.99 percent. Alfa Romeo edged out the overall market as it slid 23.57 percent after shifting 3,190 units, its share coming it at 2.92 percent while Jeep was FGA's worst performer in year-on-year terms dropping 58.68 percent to 400 units. The Fiat Group's two luxury/performance divisions both lost more than half their sales in September, Ferrari slumped 51.72 percent to 14 units while Maserati was down 55.00 percent to 9 cars.

For the year-to-date 1,090,627 new cars have been sold in Italy, down 20.46 percent on the same period last year. The Fiat Group matches that sharp drop, it is down 20.62 percent to 323,951 units. Compared to 408,089 units sold during the same period last year that added up to shedding eighty five thousand units so far this year. The Fiat Group has a 29.70 percent market share for the first nine months of the year.

The Fiat brand has sold 228,420 units for the year-to-date, down 20.21 percent to take a 20.94 percent share of the market. Lancia is on 56,589 units, down 15.26 percent, to grab a 5.19 percent share while Alfa Romeo is on 33,619 units, down 30.27 percent for a 3.08 percent share. The nominal brands are also in the red ink, Jeep is down 15.76 percent to 5,014 units (to claim a 0.46 percent market share), Ferrari drops 57.56 percent to 219 units while Maserati plunges 74.06 percent and has only managed to shift 90 cars on its domestic market so far this year.

Amongst the segments Fiat's Panda, Italy's best selling car in September, and 500 topped A-segment with 9,214 and 3,544 sales respectively, the former shedding one thousand two hundred sales compared to the same month last year while the latter dropped just over five hundred units. For the year-to-date the Panda is on 88,684 units, mirroring last year, while the 500 is on 34,306 having lost nearly a third of its volumes. The Panda is also Italy's top seller so far this year. Of the 500s sales, the convertible 500C accounted for 160 units and it is on 2,835 for the year-to-date.

In B-segment the Fiat Punto is the top seller but its sales are dramatically shrinking away and 6,999 units represented a loss of three thousand units while for the year-to-date the supermini is on 64,839 sales, having lost nearly a third of its sales. Second in B-segment was the Lancia Ypsilon but like the new Panda it isn't proving a hit with consumers and 3,356 units represented a fall of more than two thousand units year-on-year. For the year-to-date the Ypsilon is on 35,907 units, a fall of five thousand units on the same period last year. The Alfa Romeo MiTo continues to fade away and it was another FGA model to see sales slump by nearly a half last month.

In C-segment the Alfa Romeo Giulietta was the second best seller with 2,420 units, roughly flat on September 2011 while for the year-to-date it is on 23,767 units, down just under five thousand units compared to the same period last yea. The Fiat Bravo was sixth in C-segment with 1,143 sales, a few hundred units down on the same month last year while for the year-to-date it is the ninth best seller in the class with 9,546 sales a fall of seven thousand when compared to January to September 2011.

In D-segment the Fiat Freemont (Dodge Journey) added 909 sales for third in class, than represented a more than halving of its sales year-on-year; for the year-to-date the minivan is on 11,486 sales.

In E-segment the Jeep Grand Cherokee saw its sales tumble to 128 units (290 units in September 2001) but for the year-to-date it is up nearly three hundred units compared to last year to 1,316 units during the same period last year. In F-segment the Ferrari 458 Italia sold 6 units in September and the Maserati GranTurismo one less.

The Lancia Voyager (Chrysler Town & Country) added 65 units in September, it is now on 1,089 since launch. One of the few bright spots was the Lancia Musa, it added 1,155 units last month to top the class for small MPVs, up more than 400 units on the same month last year while the new Fiat 500L weighed in to take second place with 938 registrations. The Musa also tops the category for the year-to-date, it is now on 10,743 units, down two thousand on the same period last year.

In 'Multispace' the Fiat Qubo was the class leader with 779 units ahead of the Doblò on 250 units. For the year-to-date the former has 8,698 sales while the latter has 2,861, which leaves them as the runaway category leaders.

Elsewhere Lamborghini sold 3 cars in Italy last month, down 62.50 percent, and is on 51 for the year-to-date, a fall of one-fifth, while DR Motor which assembles selected models in Italy from China's Chery Automobile from CKD kits added 45 cars last month, a drop of 77.39 percent. DR Motor now has 581 sales for the year-to-date, down 77.21 percent on the same period last year.
