05.08.2018 LITTLE TO SMILE ABOUT FOR ALFA ROMEO AND FIAT IN THE U.S. DURING JUNE

ALFA ROMEO STELVIO SUV 2018

Worrying for Alfa Romeo is the recent performance of the new Stelvio as its month-on-month growth seems to have currently run out of steam. After steadily building up momentum since its launch last year it shifted 702 units in April before jumping above the four-figure barrier during May, with 1,183 units sold, and then adding a few dozen more in June with 1,231 sales. However, last month it dropped to slightly to rest on 1,140 sales, it’s weakest performance since May.

There was little in the way of positive news for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) two Italian brands in the US last month as Alfa Romeo’s two key models have now run out of steam while the Fiat brand continued its year-long slump, its sales were down 45% year-on-year.

Alfa Romeo sold 2,016 cars during July with that total being split between the Stelvio, with 1,140 sales, and the Giulia, with 858 sales.

The Stelvio was just going on sale in July last year (22 units were in fact registered that month) so year-on-year data isn’t comparable yet, however the Giulia lost 22% of its sales year-on-year last month when compared to the 1,104 units it sold in July 2017.

Worrying for Alfa Romeo is the recent US sales performance of the new Stelvio SUV as its month-on-month growth seems to have currently run out of steam.

After steadily building up momentum since its launch last year it shifted 702 units in April before jumping above the four-figure barrier during May, with 1,183 units sold, and then adding a few dozen more in June with 1,231 sales. However, last month it dropped to slightly to rest on 1,140 sales, it’s weakest performance since May, albeit month-on-month data isn’t always an ideal metric and it remains to be seen if it can gather steam again.

The Giulia has in fact also it tailed off in recent months, and after shifting 1,183 units in April, it was almost flat on 1,175 units in May, before slipping back just under the four-figure marker during June to 979 units and then losing ground further to 858 sales last month.

Finally, for Alfa Romeo, the balance of its total came from the 4C sportscar which weighed in with 22 sales last month, down 4 units and 18% on the same month last year.

Meanwhile, the Fiat brand’s dismal year continues unabated and its 1,240 sales last month was down 45% on the 2,244 units it shifted during July last year.

All the quartet of models that comprise Fiat’s stateside range were firmly in the red ink as the brand slumped 45% to 1,240 units during July. However, the rottenest apple in the barrel continues to be the 500 which saw its sales collapse by two-thirds year-on-year; its 363 units shifted in July was down 65% when compared to the 1,026 units sold during the seventh month of last year.

The rest of the 500 “family” also struggled to make a connection with US consumers last month as the 500L was down 37% to 107 units while the 500X was also down 37%, this time to 378 units. Finally, the 124 Spider didn’t escape the red ink either, albeit it enjoyed the gentlest fall in year-on-year terms, down 13% to 392 units.

For the year-to-date the Alfa Romeo brand is now up 14,281 sales in the US, which is split pretty evenly between the Giulia and Stelvio, with 7,220 units for the former and 6,909 for the latter, and the brand as a whole is up a heartening 189% on the same period last year when it had shifted 4,944 cars. The final model in the range is the 4C which is down 43% to 152 units for the first seven months of the year.

In total FCA sold 170,970 vehicles in the US during July which was up almost ten thousand units and 6% on the same month last year. As usual the biggest volumes were recorded by Jeep, which was up 15% to 79,906 units and followed by Ram, up 25% to 45,065 units. Jeep had three big winners last month as Cherokee sales rose 71% to 20,210 units, Compass sales rose 63% to 12,300 units and Wrangler sales rose 14% to 21,308 units.

FCA’s other two American brands, Chrysler and Dodge, didn’t have much to shout about last month, the former was down 13% to 11,624 units while the latter was flat on 31,119 units. The bulk of Chrysler’s sales came from the Pacifica, which was up 6% to 8,775 units, while for Dodge, Charger sales rose 6%% to 5,743 units and the Journey rose 23% to 8,345 units.

For the year-to-date FCA is on 1,286,446 units in the US, up 5% year-on-year, with the Jeep brand accounting for 574,928 units, up 21%. The rest comprise of Ram, with 305,406 units, down 6%, Chrysler, on 100,254 units, down 13% and finally Dodge is on 282,052 units and down 3%.
