28.11.2002  PROTOYPES TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT 27TH BOLOGNA MOTOR SHOW

>>> 27th Bologna Motor Show Preview:  Fiat motorsport cars at the show

The Motor Show, where sport is entertainment, simply had to devote a special area to these special cars. The feast of cars and engines that is the Bologna Show is the ideal backdrop to show off the Punto Abarth Rally driven so successfully by Paolo Andreucci in the Italian Rally Super 1600 Championship.

The car is derived from the Punto HGT (130 bhp) and has been adjusted to meet FIA Super 1600 regulations. The size has therefore changed: the Fiat Punto Rally is 122 mm broader and 40 mm lower than the HGT (its length has remained the same). The wings, bumpers and upper spoiler are new and made out of composite material.

Engine displacement has been reduced to 1579 cc (the Punto HGT is powered by a 1.8 16v unit). This has been achieved by altering the stroke by fitting a new, lighter crankshaft. New racing pistons and connecting rods have also been fitted. The engine flywheel is lighter, while the exhaust manifold is new and the intake manifold is single. The power unit develops an impressive power output of 215 bhp at 8300 rpm. The integrated ignition and injection system is by Magneti Marelli.

The transmission consists of a single-plate metal-ceramic clutch, a 6-speed gearbox (plus reverse) with frontal engagement and sequential control, and a self-locking, lamellar differential.

The suspension, also new, has been developed to accommodate the broader body and comes in two versions: one for asphalt and the other for unsurfaced roads. The front end is fitted with a light alloy pillar combined with dual-setting oleopneumatic shock-absorbers. The rear end comes with an advanced version of the standard torsion beam with springs coaxial with the shock absorbers. All the joints are Uniballs. The asphalt and unsurfaced road versions also differ in terms of the type of spring and shock absorber used and their different ground clearances. The light alloy wheels are 7x17" (for asphalt) and 6x16" (for unsurfaced roads).

The braking system comes with a dual pump. The Brembo calipers and discs fitted at the front come with different cross sections according to road surface type. Standard discs, again with Brembo calipers, are fitted at the rear. The system also comes with a front and rear brakeforce distributor on the pedal, a driver-controlled regulator and a hydraulic handbrake.

A place of honour on the sports car stand is also reserved for the Fiat Stilo Abarth Rally due to race in the 2003 Trophy. The car is derived from the Stilo 1.8 16v version and has been revised to meet international FIA Group N standards.

These are the main changes. The engine power of 1747 cc has been increased from its initial value of 133 bhp to 147 bhp, developed at 6900 rpm. The transmission system now consists of a single-plate metal-ceramic clutch while the gearbox is still the standard 5-speed (plus reverse) unit with the addition of frontal engagement and closer ratios. The laminar differential is self-locking The suspension has also been modified in some of its parts and can come in two configurations: one for asphalt and the other for unsurfaced roads. The Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs with height-adjustable shims at the front are racing-specific.
The light alloy wheels are 7x17" (for asphalt) and 6x15" (for unsurfaced roads).

The braking system consists of self-ventilated front discs and standard rear discs with a driver-controlled pressure regulator. The handbrake is hydraulic.
The Stilo Abarth Rally body comes with a roll-bar and homologated FIA cage, fire extinguisher system, racing seats, 5-point seatbelts and battery disconnector. All components meet current rally racing requirements.

The last car exhibited on the Fiat motorsport stand is a Fiat Stilo that bears the prestigious Abarth logo, a brandname that has always been a byword for gutsy, sporty cars for young drivers.

The Abarth version of the Fiat Stilo is available only with a 2.4 20 v engine. The equipment list offers the following as standard: CONNECT Nav+, bi-zone climate control system, Cruise Control, an active matrix reconfigurable multipurpose display and the sophisticated ESP (Electronic Stability Program) that cuts in under extreme conditions when car stability is at risk to help the driver regain control. It goes without saying that standard equipment on the Fiat Stilo 2.4 Abarth always includes rain and parking sensors, automatic headlights, electrically-operated rear windows, leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever gaiter, steering wheel controls (11 keys), burnished insets on the facia panels, body-coloured protective side panels and handles, height-adjustable front seats and 16" alloy rims. The three-door version also comes with a sporty spoiler as standard.
