20.07.2002  ART CENTRE COLLEGE STUDENTS SHOW OFF TWO ALFA ROMEO GT BASED CONCEPTS

The Art Centre College of Design held its 2002 Graduation Senior Show recently. It featured models and drawings by ten graduating students on the Batchelor of Science - Transportation design programme. All ten works featuring themes on cars, motorbikes and scooters were regarded as highly innovative, the college living up to its long standing tradition of moulding fresh thinking designers.

Two works were based on traditional Alfa Romeo GT themes: Tom Matsumoto's Alfa Romeo Elessa and Jae Shin's Alfa Romeo GT Xapher. Both try expand on the large traditional-mould Alfa Romeo GT theme which is currently occupying the minds of designers and has recently spawned Italdesign's Alfa Romeo Brera.

The Elessa, a large touring saloon, features a strongly stated Alfa front grille which sits between current Alfa family-shaped air intakes, a long sweeping bonnet, compact cabin and Alfa-style long thin rear lights. Large protruding wheelarches, which mould the design of each corner, give the Elessa the appearance of squatting on its haunches. The whole design, while giving off a powerful 'in your face' large GT feel, incorporates beautiful fluid, flowing lines.

Meanwhile, Jae Shin's Xapher, is a pure two seater, large front engined rear wheel drive GT. Shin has created a no-compromise GT shape which exudes raw muscular power, in the style of the Chrysler Viper. In his shape you can see the Audi TT idea taken to extremes. It has a strong hint of the recent Alfa Romeo Bella concept car but again the Bella's smooth lines are sacrificed in the pursuit of aggression. Aiming to incorporate Alfa's individual stamp into the vehicle he has used the familar grille 'heart' as a focus and incorporated a design feature which clasps the front badge and flows back along the bonnet and up the front screen. Shin has also gone to great lengths to make the rear of the concept, while flowing down from the bulging bonnet and tapering cockpit, harmonious with the front.
