07.01.2003  LUCA DI MONTEZEMOLO OFFICIALLY UNVEILS THE MASERATI KUBANG GT WAGON IN DETROIT

2003 North American International Motor Show

Ferrari-Maserati Group Chairman Luca di Montezemolo has officially unveiled the Maserati Kubang GT Wagon at the North American International Motor Show in Detroit. He was joined for the ceremony by the SUV concept's designer, Giorgetto Guigaro.

Montezemolo went on to outline the vital importance of the US as the number one market for both Italian marques. Ferrari's 1203 cars sold in 2002 up 18% year on year, while Maserati, who only returned to North America last year, delivered 900 Coupes and Spyders.

“We are particularly happy to be here in Detroit with Ferrari and Maserati, as both these marques have very close links with this country. For the past twenty years, America has been the most important market for Ferrari. Now, exactly one year after returning to the USA with its Coupe and Spyder, the same also applies to Maserati, which sold 900 cars in North America. The Ferrari figure of 1203 cars delivered to customers means that North American sales are up 18% on 2001.
2002 was an unforgettable year, adding to the Group’s success in Formula 1, with a fourth consecutive title, and a 10% increase in turnover compared with 2001. A figure of 7,500 cars sold between both marques is 20% up on 2001. Maserati has therefore doubled its sales, while Ferrari, sticking to its policy of limiting production, has maintained last year’s figure, albeit with a slight increase. This success has come on the back of heavy investment in research and development and in 2002, this represented 20% of turnover.

2003 will be a particularly tough year for the Group, with the arrival of the new Maserati Quattroporte, plans to strengthen the sales network, particularly for Maserati as well as consolidation in the USA, where with Ferrari, we plan to maintain our record of sales in the forthcoming year. In 2004, we will move into new markets, such as Russia and expand in China.

In the case of Maserati, thanks to the success in 2002 of the Spyder and Coupe, we are going through a very busy period with new initiatives. Today, we unveil the “Kubang” concept vehicle, a GT Wagon, born out of the collaboration between Maserati and Giugiaro. It is a completely new concept for Maserati, but maintains the marque’s tradition for sports grand tourers. It is a very versatile four wheel drive, with sports performance but considerable cabin space. It is very comfortable, easy to live with for recreational purposes and also daily use. For the time being, it is just a concept, but we really want to make it a reality as soon as possible.”
