24.06.2003  ALFA ROMEO PLAN LARGE RANGE OF NEW ENGINES FOR NEW MODELS INCLUDING GM AND FERRARI DEVELOPED UNITS


ALFA ROMEO FORTHCOMING ENGINES

The Powertrain ( GM/Fiat ) developed 'Electron' HFV6 engine will be made available to Alfa Romeo in all three dimensions: 2.8, 3.2 & 3.6-lites. Features of the new engine include: all-aluminum construction, dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), 4-valve-per-cylinder valvetrain, roller-finger follower valvetrain, continuously variable cam phasing, electronic throttle control (ETC), durable forged-steel crankshaft, piston-cooling oil jets, coolant-loss protection software, GM’s Oil Life System, 32 bit microprocessor, coil-on-plug ignition. The engine will be built in Australia with capacity expected to be 200,000 units per year.

Specifically for Alfa Romeo will be the additional of the direct injection JTS system. The new Uniair will also be offered on higher specification versions & Orbital 'air-induction' is being considered at present.

The 'Electron' HFV6 will appear in these specifications:

2.8 V6 JTS 230cv & 300Nm
3.2 V6 JTS 260cv & 350Nm
3.2 V6 Twinturbo JTS Uniair 400cv & 540Nm ( in the 158 GTA )
3.6 V6 JTS 320cv & 400Nm
3.6 V6 Twinturbo JTS Uniair 480cv & 600Nm ( in the TZ3 )

Alfa Romeo will not make use of the second Powertrain offering, the new 'Global' XV8 4.3 JTS. ( This engine with 360cv & 480Nm, will be used by Lancia firstly in the Thesis as early as the end of next year & possibly in future Fiats ). However Alfa Romeo have concluded an agreement with Ferrari for the exclusive use of their new 5.0 V10 engine, currently under development, as well as the familiar 4.2 & 6.0 units. 

A second Ferrari 5.0 V8 is being built, this is an increased-dimension version of the 4.2 V8 ( currently fitted to the Maserati Coupe & Spyder ) which will make its world debut later this year in the Quattroporte. 

4.2 V8 JTS 430cv & 500Nm
5.0 V10 JTS 500-550cv & 60Nm ( in the 168 )
5.0 V10 JTS Uniair 600cv & 650Nm ( in the TZ4 )
6.0 V12 JTS Uniair 630cv & 750Nm

The 4.2 V8 will be used in the GTA versions of the new Spider, GTV & Brera. The 6.0 V12 JTS Uniair with 630cv & 750Nm will be fitted to the Alfa Romeo TZ3 GTA Scuderia Ferrari. While the 2007 Alfa Romeo TZ4 will offer the 5.0 V10 JTS Uniair with 600cv and 650Nm.

Lancia will not use the GM/Powertrain XV8 engine but will use a Ferrari engine in their 'Supercar of the Centenary' in 2006, the Lancia Stratos HF, mid-mounted it will be either the 4.2 V8 with 400bhp or the Quattroporte's new 5.0 V10 with over 450bhp.
