Michael Schumacher cruised to an easy victory in the Spanish Grand PrixMichael Schumacher, powered away from pole into a lead he was never to relinquish all afternoon, crushing the opposition and ending the race 35 seconds ahead of second place Juan Pablo Montoya's Williams-BMW.

He had lined up on the grid in the spare car after his race car developed hydraulic problems, but coupled with the Bridgestone tyres suitability to the Baracelona track, and the new F2002's evident superiority, the race was, like San Marino, a formality. Schumacher commented after, "The Bridgestones worked really well around here, with minimal wear all race and the Barelona track seemed to suit our car".

Rubens Barrichello, meanwhile had stalled on the parade lap, the Ferrari mechanics pushed him to the back of the grid, but gear selection problems meant that he was unable to get away as the lights went green and his race was over before it had started.

David Coultard eventually took the final podium position ahead of the Saubers of Nick Heidfeld and Fellippe Massa, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen gained Arrow's first point of the season, rounding off the top six ahead of the two Toyota's. Of the other front runners, Kimi Raikkonen in the McLaren-Mercedes lost a front wing on lap 4, while the Renault's both retired late in the race while heading towards points scoring positions.

27th April 2002: qualifying

After dominating most of the qualifying session, Rubens Barrichello saw pole snatched away by Ferrari team mate Michael Schumacher in the dying secondsIn a repeat of San Marino, Rubens Barrichello dominated most of the qualifying session, until Michael Schumacher snatched pole away on his last flying lap to give Ferrari their second consecutive front row lock out. Schumachers pole lap of 1m16.364sec was the fastest lap ever recorded around the Barcelona track.

Ralf Schumacher claimed third, and team mate Juan Pablo Montoya joined him in the dying seconds after finding a lap time to push him up the grid, after he had struggled most of the session when an early car failure out on the track had seen him rush back to the pits to take the spare car out.

The session was briefly red flagged after Alex Yoong lost his front wing on the start-finish straight. Although it looked to have been caused by the kerbs, it was an almost carbon copy of Mark Webber's incident in early morning practice when he suffered front wing failure, and with this dilemma Minardi took the decision to withdraw from the meeting.
