Fiat Automóveis presents the new Brazilian-built Fiat Uno which comes with all attributes that will make it a new success story, and, in addition to the new concept and bold lines, it enables an unprecedented level of customisation for the Brazilian market. A new icon in the segment. With countless options from the factory and the dealer, the client can customise the car at his/her taste, with optional items and accessories, turning the new Uno into an extension of his/her own individuality.

However, behind the innovative look there is also a well-defined machine. It marks the premiere of two new engines - Fire 1.0 Evo and Fire 1.4 Evo, both Flex fuel – that incorporate modern technologies to ensure great performance with fuel saving and low level of emissions.

To formulate the concept of the new model and achieve its surprising shapes, the designers from the Fiat Style Center for Latin America and from the Fiat Style Center in Italy did not try to guess what the consumer wanted. On the contrary – first they talked to the client and only then they started creating the car. Open communication was adopted throughout the development, until the product clinics with the actual-size internal and external style models. This way, there was no room for error.

An important data collected throughout research was how the Brazilian consumer sees the Fiat Uno: an icon, a parameter of longevity, a robust, reliable, economical car – both on the purchase and on the maintenance and fuel consumption. A tale of success with square lines, removed from the sharp, rounded lines of most models currently in the market. Several concepts were proposed in this universe. The winner was “New Square – square and resistant like no other”. In other words, a new reading of the square. An evolution. The new Uno.

For this reason, it gets the same name as the famous hatchback, but it will not be available to the market to replace it: Uno Mille continues as a landmark – after all, it was the model that opened the segment of 1.0 engine cars in Brazil, in 1990 – and as an option with exceptional cost/benefit ratio.

On the best Uno tradition, the new hatchback has compact lines that encompass a cozy, well-lit cabin, with optimum space for all passengers and offering convenience items such as power steering, air conditioning and radio with CD / MP3 player with Bluetooth, hands-free and USB connection, as well as important safety equipment, such as airbags and ABS brakes.

The new Fiat Uno also brings an unprecedented concept for its segment: the heated windshield, with the defogging function. This item, when activated, takes up to three minutes to completely defog the windshield. After this time elapses, the function is automatically deactivated.

The new Fiat Uno will be available in four finish versions, all with four doors – two with 1.0 engine and two with 1.4 engine – and keeps the name of one of the most successful versions of the hatchback: the Way model. In all of them, the consumer can be sure that he/she will find a modern, bold car with excellent engines and lots of personality. They are: Uno Vivace 1.0 Flex, Uno Way 1.0 Flex, Uno Attractive 1.4 Flex, and Uno Way 1.4 Flex.

DESIGN

The evolution of square

One of the great reasons of pride for the Fiat Style Center for Latin America is the entire process for creation of the new Fiat Uno, but this would mean little if the end product was not special. And the new Fiat Uno is special. From the beginning of the creation process, designers worked side by side with a research studio, asking questions, presenting proposals and obtaining feedback.

The rationale: by listening to the client, it would be possible to screen and refine his/her suggestions in order to create exactly the car of his/her dreams. What the designers found out was that the first Fiat Uno, the icon, should be the starting point for an entirely new car. The Fiat Style Center started drafting the new car, and the research determined if it was exactly what the client wanted. The answers pointed out the path to be followed.

The result: an absolutely original concept, humorously named “Round Square,” which guided the entire development of the new car. And what is exactly a round square? Going from the icon Uno and its square shapes, the designers created the “New Square”: pop and modern, the evolution. To give it a shape, they used premises from Industrial Design (industrial drawing) – instead of the traditional principles of Automotive Design, with its curvier, sportive lines – to create the round lines of the new model.

Adopting the square as a reference, a car with geometrical, balanced shapes was conceived. The squares with curves take back to Fiat Uno, but, at the same time, represent a contemporary concept and a trend from now on. Past, present and future fuse with boldness and bring the new.

Externally

Round squares are noticed, first, on the surprising front of the new Fiat Uno: the Fiat designers positioned three purely aesthetic elements between the left headlight and the company logo, which capture the eye and entice the curiosity to explore beyond. Only then it is noticed that the motif is reproduced in all external elements on the new Fiat Uno, being expressed in countless ways, and it is also noticed that no line is random: all shapes are studied, meticulously constructed to contrast with the round surfaces. The fruit of the designers’ skill and inspiration is an innovative car that transmits dynamism, solidity, youth and modernity without losing the playful aspect.

On the front, for example, the large and encircling bumper has a square divided by a horizontal bar, where the license plate and two air inlets are positioned. Its rounded corners play geometrically with the lateral squares that embed the fog lights, and also lead the eyes to the headlights, comprised of two overlapped squares with round corners. The front hood cut is sinuous and gains strength with an increase of volume that ends on the lower part of the windshield. The lateral cut is very near the front wheel housings, like on the first Uno. They form different volumes defined by grooves, giving the car a robust, differentiated aspect. Its upper surfaces meet with the voluminous waistline, reinforcing this aspect. On the side, in addition to the “square” wheel housings, there is an aesthetic rectangular groove, with rounded corners, which, along with the new handles, characterize the lines of the new Uno. The curves on the roof and the rear window harmonize with the straight line of the lower edge of the windows and the waistline, parallel to it – traces that give horizontality and a sense of solidity.

The large rear lights positioned on the rear pillar invade the side, offering maximum visibility in any situation. They also balance the design of the rear and make the pillars aesthetically lighter. They also have curves similar to the ones in the rear windows, a geometrical play of contours that makes the look of the new Fiat Uno even more innovative and interesting. On the internal side, the lights surround the wide rear windshield with simpler and straighter volumes. The rear door has a curved surface, and the encircling bumper meets the wheel housings, always with well-defined curves and straight lines that, by playing with the squares, set the tone to this car.

Internally

Also playing with geometry, the inside of the new Fiat Uno contrasts with the exterior by exploring round shapes. Cozy, friendly, light and youthful, they invite people to stay inside the car. Once more, everything happened for a reason. Contours, reliefs, colors, textures, graphs, finish, everything was conceived and planned in detail both from the style and from the ergonomics and comfort points of view. Thus, the cabin is spacious, well-lit, comfortable, functional and very well finished – it is completely lined, with no apparent plates, and is definitely in full harmony with the spirit of the new model.

One of the highlights in the cabin is the panel. The front part has the insert molding technology, a film stamped and injected along with the plastic component – it is a serial item on the versions Attractive and Way, and an optional item on Vivace. This resource enables the creation of different, colorful and decorative graphic elements, and also allows the owner of a new Fiat Uno to personalize it with one of the many drawings offered as accessories by the manufacturer. The standards and textures in other parts of the panel also innovate. Looking closely, it is possible to see infinite small squares – with rounded corners, obviously—throughout the surface. With a pleasant touch and easy to look at, they offer even more quality to the finish of the new Fiat Uno.

The instrument panel repeats the circular theme, including its display. It is lit by white LEDs, and is clear to read, making the driver’s life easier. The Vivace version also has the Econometer (economy gauge), the same indicator of instant consumption that equips the Uno Mille Economy and the Palio Fire Economy models.

The seat lining was also object of long studies. Instead of being content with the usual, the designers researched new technologies and products to achieve a result consistent with both the style and quality of the new Fiat Uno. Thus, each version has its own fabric – it can be woven, mesh, velvet or a combination of technologies – all of them developed by different suppliers exactly the way designers wanted to. The lining is also repeated on door side panels. The attention to details obviously included the fabric patterns.

Habitability

An interior as well defined as the exterior

Ergonomics, comfort, visibility and practicality are some of the crucial points for making the experience of driving a car truly pleasant, especially because the car’s nature has changed: it went from a simple method of transport to a place where it is often possible to spend hours in a row, almost an extension of your home. And no one wants to stay for long in an uncomfortable, unpleasant place. These premises were taken seriously by the designers and engineers of the new Fiat Uno. A database with current estimates on the population’s height has served as a basis for the entire development of the new model’s cabin. From the internal space to the arrangement of different components – such as position of pedals; alignment of pedal board, steering wheel and seat; visibility of instruments and driver commands; design of seats and functionality of the gear handle. The product clinics have already confirmed that the new Fiat Uno offers a high level of comfort.

But that’s not all. Every person who gets into the new Fiat Uno must take a positive experience from it, and that is why Fiat Automobile made an extra effort to create a cozy, well-lit, comfortable and functional cabin for driver and passengers, making it the ideal vehicle for the day-to-day life. The driver, of course, got special attention. For him/her, driving the new hatchback must be good in the most different aspects: from activating a lever to the seat adjustment mechanism, everything must work out fine. Therefore, a pleasant ambience that does not make him/her lose focus was created, where all commands are easy to reach and the instruments are easy to read. The driver’s seat, for example, was designed to accommodate a broad range of statures, giving the driver optimum leg space, even for taller people. For this purpose, the new Uno counts with a rail for longitudinal adjustment around 30 mm longer if compared with the other models of its category. To obtain this space, all you have to do is remove a mechanical lock on the rail.

The front seats have foams and covers with ergonomic conformation – the sides stand out a little, reminding of sports seats, and help support the body – and integrated headrest. The seat height adjustment, with a travel of 40 mm, is actuated by a lever. The back seat has a locking system that enables to adjust the inclination angle in two positions. On the narrower angle (18°), the luggage compartment gains 10 liters of volume, and approximately 30 mm on the longitudinal distance. The seat can also be fully reclined to increase the load capacity.

One of the strengths of the new Fiat Uno is its object holders. There are several of them, positioned in strategic locations, aiming to facilitate cabin organisation. Depending on the version, there are 11 to 14 of them, arranged on the panel, the central console and even on the internal lid of the luggage compartment, among other points. In all versions, the glove compartment has a lid – this was a request from clients still in the product clinics. The central console on the versions 1.0 has two object holders; on the versions 1.4, it is longer and has three object holders – which is an optional item on the versions 1.0. Object holder pockets on the front door panels are a serial item in all versions. The versions 1.4 also have a sunglass holder above the driver’s door. Another important item is the ceiling console – an excellent inclusion in a model on this segment, a serial item on the versions 1.4 and optional item on the versions 1.0 – that incorporates a mirror to watch the backseat, to monitor children on them.

With a highly interesting internal space for a compact car, which influences the well-being and freedom of movement, the new Fiat Uno brings a habitability rate (value that determines the volume of comfort for the vehicle passengers) of 2,219 liters, the best in its category. The model also ensures good luggage compartment volume, with 280 liters, and may reach 290 liters, depending on the backseat position.

Along with ergonomics, the technology on the new Fiat Uno expands comfort even further. Equipment such as power steering, air conditioning, radio with CD / MP3 player, with or without Bluetooth, hands-free and USB port, electric locks and front power windows, internal command to open the luggage compartment and the fuel tank lid, steering wheel with height adjustment, among many other items, are offered to the new hatchback.

CUSTOMISATION

A car similar to its owner

How about choosing stylistic details that match the car with its owner? Manifesting your own identity and individuality through the car’s look? In the case of the new Fiat Uno, the days when the only choices the buyer had were the color of the body and, sometimes, of the internal lining are long gone. Fiat’s new model opens an array of options that allow a personalization level never seen before in the Brazilian market – and with the Fiat guarantee. With new Fiat Uno’s concept of being truly unique, the client has the possibility to customise the car both in the factory and with accessories made available on Fiat dealers. The owner of a new Uno can choose from a wide range of stickers, badges and appliqués. They can be applied to different parts of the car: doors, rear pillar, roof, bumpers, fenders, external rearview mirrors, handles, gear lever knob, parking brake, and panel frames.

As a factory optional item, the new Fiat Uno offers six customisation kits with different themes for each versions. These are:

Kits Square and Smile for the Vivace version. The first one brings external embellishments such as stickers on the sides and also on the lid of the boot, badge stickers to be applied to the rear column and grey aesthetic rings on the front grille. The Smile kit, which is aimed at the inside of the car, offers a central frame for the instrument panel, in shiny black, as well as a coating in an exclusive material for the seats and door panels, as well as carpeting in carpet material and rubber.

Jeans and Sunny Kits come for the Attractive version. The Jeans Kit, which customizes the external part of the car, has stickers for the luggage compartment lid and front fenders, badge for the rear pillar, in addition to yellow rings in the front grille. The Sunny offers the central frame of the instruments panel glossy black, coating in a unique fabric for the seats and door panels, plus mats in carpet and rubber.

Tribal and Steel Kits, developed for the Way versions. The Tribal Kit is comprised of stickers in the luggage compartment lid and the rear pillar + badge stickers in the front fenders. The Steel Kit brings the central frame of the instruments panel glossy black + steering wheel in leather + mats in carpet and rubber with the Way printing.

Those who do not want to customize their new Uno straight from the factory, they can do so afterwards at the dealerships. They offer three kits with exclusive themes: WWW, Arabesco and Podium. And there is more – there, the client can by the contents of these packages and also from the factory kits separately. Examples: stickers, banners, badges, roof tattooing, instruments panel frame, appliqués for the gear lever knob and brakes, mats, among others.

In addition to these options, the client counts, further, with a broad variety of accessories. He/She can also equip the new Fiat Uno with mats, airfoils, ‘mini-skirts’ and sports pedal boards, appliqués on the front grille, wheels and hubs with different colors and tips, handles and chrome-plated rearview mirrors covers. On the dealership, the client also has a wide range of accessories. Alarm, parking sensor, sump guard (that doesn’t need to be removed during oil changes) and fog lights, items which increase safety – to the asset and when driving. Rain chute, coupling for towing, sill protectors and rubber mats and carpet are items of equipment that increase convenience and comfort. There is total freedom of choice and countless possible combinations to turn the vehicle virtually into an extension of the owner’s personality. So, the owner “wears” the car according to his/her image.

Safety

A car conceived to protect the passengers

From body to mechanics, the new Fiat Uno was built to ensure the safety of its passengers. Check out why: The body ensures the vehicle’s structural performance and, at the same time, is lighter than the body from other models in the category (which improves fuel saving). There are reinforcements strategically positioned to further enhance the structural performance.

The hood was designed with programmed deformation: if there is a frontal collision, it absorbs the energy from the impact, defending the cabin’s integrity. The front airbags and seat belts with pre-tensioner, optional items for all versions of the new Fiat Uno, complement the hood’s action, reinforcing safety. The doors have tubular protection bars, which help preserve the physical integrity of passengers in case of side collision. Another important aspect on the doors is that their special construction enables to open them even after impact. The front seats are the anti-submarining type, and their headrests were designed to avoid the whiplash effect on the neck of driver and passenger, reducing the risk of harm to the cervical column in case of accident. The steering column, in turn, was made to minimize physical harm to the driver in the event of a head-on collision.

On the mechanical aspect, the new Fiat Uno incorporates solutions that ensure its stability and help the driver maintain control of the car in any situation. The suspension was conceived to maintain the directional stability and face any type of terrain without transmitting to the cabin the vibrations caused by irregular surfaces, providing maximum safety to the passengers without compromising the comfort.

On the front, the hatchback has a MacPherson-type suspension and lower arms with right triangle. The anti-roll bar is anchored on the dampers. The helical springs are of the side-load type. This set has the function of minimizing the effect of the braking load in a curve, ensuring the best balance in all gear conditions, and also absorbing the maximum of the surface roughness. The rear suspension is made of semi-independent wheels with torsion shaft, in order to enhance the structural solidity and increase the suspension’s flexibility with load obtained through the increase in the dimension of the rubber that connects to the body, which improves dynamic responses in curves. The elastic pads had their size increased with the purpose of improving the filtering of floor irregularities, increasing the comfort while driving, and the dampers were designed to expand the stability threshold conditions on curves

For the new Fiat Uno, the brakes were sized according to the version and the presence, or not, of ABS system. On the front, there is a disc with floating caliper; on the rear, a drum with self-centering shoe, and automatic play adjustment, as well as a double master cylinder. The system is a double cross circuit – if there is damage in one of them, the other stops the vehicle – and, without ABS, it also has braking correction valve that operates on the rear brakes. Finally, to make braking on slippery roads safer, the new Fiat Uno offers an anti-lock system (ABS) on brakes as an optional item in all versions. Along with this system, there is also EBD - electronic braking distribution.

ENGINES

Two new engines for the new Fiat Uno

The new Fiat Uno marks the premiere of the Fire Evo family of engines, which strong points are reduction in fuel consumption and better use of energy, with lower emission of pollutants and noise. Developed by FPT – Powertrain Technologies in Brazil, the Evo family equips all versions of the new Fiat Uno with 1.0 liter and 1.4 liter engines. Both are Flex engines and have a series of technological novelties and components never seen before in low-cylinder capacity engines. Check them out.

THE FIRE 1.0 EVO ENGINE:

This new engine incorporates a number of devices designed to enhance performance and reduce the internal friction – consequently reducing the levels of consumption and emission of pollutants.

Long connecting rods. Developed especially to work with the height of the new pistons, they are made of C70 forged steel and are among the lightest in the market. The connecting rods for the Fire 1.0 Evo engine have gained 26.5% in length: from 111.85 mm to 140.5 mm. This construction reduces the engine friction on both sides. The connecting rod cover is of the fractured type, ensuring total precision in the assembly – with benefits such as lower friction and higher reliability.

Pistons. The lighter pistons direct the mix to the spark plug. Among its advantages, we can mention its hub, which special design helps maintain the mechanical resistance and the asymmetric skirts and low tangency load rings, which generate lower friction. Its compression height is 24.5 mm, which grants it lower weight. The 1.0 engine pistons have low-friction rings with only 1 mm of height on the first and second rings.

Manifold. Made of plastic, it has a new design that favors the seamlessness of the flow to the four cylinders, as well as optimizing the performance and reducing losses of load.

Automatic distribution belt tensioner. The Fire Evo engine has distribution belt tension ensured throughout the equipment’s work life, consequently increasing the system reliability and helping to reduce noises.

Camshaft. It was designed to privilege torque in low speeds, enhancing the performance. The component was developed through computer simulations in order to achieve the ideal design. The dynamics of cams was especially studied to operate in conjunction with the valves’ reduced load springs. The result: a quieter system, enhancing even more the comfort and pleasure to drive.

Valve lid. Made of aluminum, its fastenings, structure and lining were conceived to increase the resistance to oil leaks. The cover also has fastenings for the coil, suction collector and engine air filter.

THE FIRE 1.4 EVO ENGINE:

The new Fire 1.4 engine has a lot in common with the 1.0 engine. Manifold in plastic, camshaft bearing covers, cooling system, aluminum valve lids, automatic distribution belt tensioner and control center, among others, are the same for both. However, it also brings other technologies, such as:

CVCP (Continuously Variable Cam Phaser). Capable of reducing consumption by up to 5%, the new distribution system enables phase variation between the valve camshaft and crankshaft of up to 40°, continuously. This component enables to use the camshaft phase ideal for each engine operation regime, optimizing the torque in low speeds and power in high speeds.

Suction and discharge ducts and new combustion chamber. All of them were conceived to work in conjunction with the CVCP system. These structures maximize turbulence in the combustion chamber, increasing the engine’s tolerance to operation with high doses of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Its special design uses both channels and the combustion chamber to form a swirl in the same direction – which increases the turbulence and, consequently, the fuel burning efficiency. Additionally, the combustion chamber and the piston top direct the mix to the spark plug especially designed with longer electrodes, contributing to increase the efficiency of the entire system.

Sequential phased coil. It has four separate coils in a single body, enabling the sequential ignition – not of the lost spark type, more common in engines with low cylinder capacity. This increases the efficiency of the CVCP system.

Engine block. Its water jacket of the U Circulation type ensures seamless cooling of all cylinders. It is the same system adopted on the modern engine Fire 1.4 16V T-Jet. The thermostat has an integrated temperature sensor.

Magneti Marelli 7G Center. Last generation, it offers larger memory and processing capacity. Its gauging privileges fuel savings.

The new Fire 1.4 Evo engine produces maximum power of 85 HP and torque of 12.4 kgf/m at 3,500 rpm, running only with gasoline. Using solely alcohol, its power is of 88 HP and its torque, 12.5 kgf/m at 3,500 rpm. Using only gasoline, the new Fire 1.0 Evo engine generates maximum power of 73 HP and maximum torque of 9.5 kgf/m at 3,850 rpm. With alcohol, the power is of 75 HP and its torque achieves 9.9 kgf/m at 3,850 rpm.

When driving the new Fiat Uno, the consumer will notice the low level of noises and vibrations from the engine. This occurs because the model has adopted the barycentric suspension – the engine is installed on two lateral fastening points aligned with its center of gravity, while a third fastening point has the sole function of restricting the engine movement. Coupled to the new engines, the five-gear mechanical transmission was scaled with ratios adequate to the Brazilian consumer’s taste and makes the new Fiat Uno able to face our irregular roads bravely and safely.

Low consumption: In addition to the new Fire 1.0 Evo and 1.4 Evo engines, Fiat’s engineering department has invested in other technologies to ensure better fuel consumption. For this purpose, it conducted an important work in the car aerodynamics and weight control, achieving the lowest density in the segment. Such a good result was added to the green tires with low resistance to rolling, where the last-generation polymers used, along with a 5% reduction on the tire weight, generate lower resistance to rolling, ensuring better performance with fuel saving. With all this, the new Uno has excellent fuel consumption. For example: the Vivace version equipped with Fire 1.0 Evo engine consumes 15.6 km/l (gasoline) and 10.5 km/l (alcohol) in the city, and 20.1 km/l (gasoline) and 12.9 km/l (alcohol) on the road. The Fire 1.4 Evo engine equips the Attractive version, which has the following fuel consumption figures: 14.7 km/l (gasoline) and 10.3 km/l (alcohol) in the city; 19.4 km/l (gasoline) and 12.8 km/l (alcohol) on the road.

NEW UNO AUTONOMY

Already comes prepared to receive adaptations

Like the entire range of passenger vehicles from Fiat, the new Uno is also able to serve users of the Autonomy Program. It can receive adaptations, executed by the companies Technobrás and Cavenaghi. Fiat Autonomy is a program created in 1996 to facilitate to the maximum the access of handicapped people to a car adapted to their needs. The Autonomy program, in addition to tax exemptions, also offers a 5% discount for the entire range of Fiat products and a specific Confiat for it.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW UNO

How a car leaves the paper and gets out on the streets

The new Uno was 100% developed at the Giovanni Agnelli Development Center, located at the factory of Betim, MG. From the birth of a concept to the first pre-series unit, the process to develop a car involves hundreds of professionals and consumes thousands of hours. In the case of the new Fiat Uno, it took three years for the car to jump from the computer screen and get to the consumer. Between designers and engineers, 600 professionals from Fiat Automobile spent approximately one million hours on the project 327. Ninety-nine prototypes were built, and another 88 were used to check the assembly processes. Between pre-series and pre-production, 239 vehicles were assembled. That is, Fiat Automobile assembled 426 units of the new Fiat Uno, encompassing all versions under development for Brazil and the Latin American markets. Its tests and trials included engine and transmission, durability, emissions, chassis, body, electrics and safety. These vehicles traveled a whooping 4,153 million kilometers. All components were submitted to the hardest tests so that Engineering was pleased with the new car's quality. On the item “reliability”, 95 cars traveled 2,375 million kilometers, totaling approximately 6.5 million kilometers of tests so that the new Fiat Uno could be available on dealers and in the customers’ garage.

FACTORY WARRANTY

The new Fiat Uno has a contractual warranty of one year with no mileage limit. Throughout the validity of the general warranty, the car owner is entitled to 24-hour assistance Confiat, which provides emergency services such as towing, mechanical help, and backup vehicle anywhere in Brazil. The new Fiat Uno is only reviewed every 15,000 km or one year. There are more than 500 Fiat service stations, among dealers and assistance stations, spread throughout Brazil to provide the necessary support to the owner of the new Uno.
